about beads

What does "lampwork" mean?
Lampwork, flamework, or torchwork beads are made one at a time, in the flame of a torch, using rods of colored glass. The earliest torches were actually oil lamps, giving us the term lampwork.

How long does it take to make a bead?
It depends on the size and intricacy of the bead—it could take 10 minutes...it could take 30 minutes or longer. However, that's just the beginning. It then has to anneal in a kiln for several hours and then be cleaned. Also, it depends on how cold it is in the Bead Shack, how much chai tea I've consumed, what's playing on the satellite radio and if the glass gods are smiling.

What kind of glass do you use?
I'm using "soft," soda-lime glass, the majority of which is Italian glass known as Moretti/Effetre.

Why do you need to put beads in a kiln?
This is necessary to anneal the glass (the process of heating and allowing to cool slowly in order to remove internal stresses and toughen the glass). If beads aren't properly annealed, they will eventually crack. If you are buying beads from an importer, be sure to find out if they've been annealed!

How long have you been making beads?
I officially started making beads in late 2004 with a Hot Head torch and mapp gas in my garage. I soon grew frustrated with that set-up and built a shed in the back yard to move the operation out of the uncomforatable and unsafe garage environment. I'm now working with a Bobcat torch and an oxygen/propane set-up in my cedar Bead Shack (and my husband says I smell like a pencil every time I come out of there!).

about jewelry

What metals do you use in your jewelry?
Currently, I'm using sterling silver, copper & brass. But I'm always exploring different design options, so you never know...next month it could be bronzed walnut shells. ;-)

What other materials do you use besides your glass beads?
I like to accent my beads with other high-quality beads and findings, such as Swarovski crystals (considered the finest brand of crystals), cultured pearls, metals and pressed glass beads.

I'm always experimenting, however, as my objective is to make unique pieces.

about sales

How do you price your beads and jewelry?
Prices are based on many variables—size, complexity of design, price of the glass and my time. I feel my work has been given a very fair price given what the market will bear.

Do you guarantee anything?
Absolutely! I guarantee the quality of all my beads and jewelry. If you aren't satisfied with your jewelry purchase, it can be returned within 15 days for a full refund. If something malfunctions in the jewelry, I'll be glad to repair it. If you need something resized, I can do that for a small fee (sizes are always listed in the description so please double-check those prior to purchase to avoid having to resize after-the-fact).

Do you sell at any shows?
I sure do. The one you can count on me doing is the Unique Boutique in Hollywood, MD (in November, around Veteran's Day weekend). My show schedule will vary year-to-year, so please check the site for up-to-date information.

Do you sell wholesale?
It depends. Let me know what you're interested in and we'll see if it's something I can accommodate (as I'm currently a full-time Creative Director at Koehler Nelson Studios, my time in the Bead Shack is limited).

Is any of your work sold through a gallery or retail shop?
Yes! My work is now being offered at:
